Bonded Title Cost: Bond Premium and DMV Fees

What a bonded title costs: the difference between the bond amount and the premium you pay, worked examples, and the other fees.

Bond amount versus premium

The state sets the bond amount, usually 1.5 or 2 times the vehicle's value. You do not pay that amount. You pay the surety a premium, a small share of it, once for the bond term. Bryant Surety charges a flat $100 for bonds up to $6,000, then $15 for every $1,000 of bond. Its example: an $8,000 vehicle needs a $12,000 bond, and the premium is $180. SuretyBondsDirect quotes from $100 to $125 for small bonds and prices large bonds on the buyer's credit.

Estimated premium by vehicle value

Vehicle value1.5x state (bond, premium)2x state (bond, premium)
$3,000$4,500 bond, about $100$6,000 bond, about $100
$5,000$7,500 bond, about $113$10,000 bond, about $150
$10,000$15,000 bond, about $225$20,000 bond, about $300
$20,000$30,000 bond, about $450$40,000 bond, about $600

How we worked the table

Each premium applies Bryant Surety's published rate ($100 up to a $6,000 bond, then 1.5% of the bond) to the bond your state would require. It is our estimate. Other sureties publish rates as low as $10 per $1,000, and a surety can charge more for weak credit.

Alabama is different

Alabama sets the bond by vehicle age, not value: $50,000 for cars and pickups under 5 model years old, $25,000 for 5 to 9 years, and $10,000 for 10 years or older. That makes the premium much higher than in value-based states.
